houseof. Extension Lead - Black Fabric Cable

This extension lead swaps the usual coil of white plastic flex for a cable woven in black and white cotton, giving you a single extra socket that actually looks like it belongs on show. A compact black plastic housing and a bright orange inline switch add a small pop of contrast against the fabric weave. Run it from behind a console table to power a hallway lamp, or let it trail elegantly from a reading chair to the nearest skirting socket. It is a small, considered upgrade for anywhere a plain white lead would otherwise be the only ugly thing in the room.

The fabric cable

The cable itself is a woven black and white cotton braid over the internal wiring, giving it a soft, textile look and a bit more resistance to the kinks and stiffness you get with ordinary plastic sheathed flex. It sits well against dark skirting boards, black hardware and mid century furniture, and pairs naturally with the rest of houseof's black finished lighting and accessories. The orange switch is the one flash of colour, easy to find by feel or by eye when you want to cut the power without reaching for the wall socket.

How it works

The lead has a UK three pin plug at one end and a single mains socket at the other, joined by a 2 metre run of cable, with an inline switch partway along so you can turn the connected device on or off at the lead itself. It is a Class 1, three core fitting that plugs straight into a standard UK wall socket. There is nothing to install or assemble; simply plug it in and connect whatever you are powering to the socket end.

Where it works best

Because it carries one socket rather than a bank of them, it suits a single lamp, speaker or small appliance that needs to reach a little further than its own cable allows, or that you want positioned somewhere without a nearby outlet. Think a floor lamp beside a sofa, a table lamp on a console in the hallway, a bedside lamp that needs to reach round a headboard, or a desk light in a home office.
