A classic lantern shape for the front door
The Hinkley Willoughby 2 Light Wall Lantern is a traditional outdoor wall lantern built around oversized clear seeded glass panels, curved lines and vintage style knob detailing. Two lamp holders sit side by side behind the glass, so it throws a fuller, more even glow than a single lantern light, which makes it a good fit for a wider porch or a more prominent front entrance.
Oil Rubbed Bronze finish
This variant is finished in Oil Rubbed Bronze, a deep, almost blackened bronze with warmer highlights where the light catches the metal. The frame is a weather resistant composite, paired with clear seeded glass that adds texture and a slight vintage distortion to the light. It works well against brick, render or painted timber, and suits a period or traditional style front door as easily as a garden wall or gate post.
How it works
Willoughby takes two E14 bulbs, which are not supplied, so you will need to add your own. It works with dimmable bulbs if you want to run it on a dimmer circuit, though the fitting itself doesn't include a dimmer. It's Class I, which means it requires an earth connection. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting. The knob detailing on the frame is decorative rather than functional.
Where it works best
Willoughby is IP44 rated, which means it's built to cope with rain and splashing water rather than direct submersion, so it's a genuine choice for an exposed porch, front entrance or garden wall where weather protection matters. With two lights rather than one, it also suits larger door surrounds, gateways or any spot where you want a wider spread of outdoor light rather than a single pool of it.
The story behind Hinkley
Hinkley began life in 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio, when Phil R. Hinkley set up as a small outdoor lantern maker with a debut catalogue of just fourteen products. A traditional lantern like Willoughby sits close to that original brief. After Phil's death in 1937, Stanley Wiedemer, who had already bought into the business, took it over outright and moved his own family to Cleveland to run it, and it stayed a family business for generations after that. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has manufactured and adapted Hinkley's designs for the UK and Europe, converting fittings like this one to 220 to 240V wiring with full CE certification.
