A traditional lantern that fixes flat to the wall

The Trellis medium wall lantern has the look of a classic hanging lantern, but it fixes flush to the wall rather than swinging from a bracket. Dense, clear seeded glass sits inside a cast frame with a generously scaled scroll arm, so light spreads out through a lightly textured pane rather than a plain sheet of glass. It holds three lights, which makes it a good match for a porch, front door or a larger exterior wall where a single light lantern would look undersized.

Regency Bronze finish

This lantern is made from mild steel finished in Regency Bronze, a warm, aged brown tone that brings out the depth in the cast detailing. The loop finial at the top and the rivet work running through the frame are designed to look like they have weathered in over decades, so it suits a period style porch as easily as a newer build aiming for a traditional feel. The seeded glass panels add texture without hiding the light source.

How it works

The Trellis takes three E14 bulbs, which are not included, so you will need to add your own when you order. Fit dimmable bulbs and it will work on a dimmer circuit, or use standard bulbs for a fixed level of light. It is wall mounted and wired to Class I, which means it needs an earth connection. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting.

Where it works best

With an IP44 rating, this lantern is protected against splashing water, so it suits porches, covered entrances and exterior walls that see some weather but not constant, direct rain. It works well fitted either side of a front door, or spaced along a run of exterior wall where you want a consistent, traditional look. It is not designed for positions that face heavy, unsheltered exposure to the elements.

The story behind Hinkley

Hinkley began in 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio, when Phil R. Hinkley started the company as a small outdoor lantern maker, with a debut catalogue of just 14 products. Outdoor lanterns like Trellis sit close to those original roots. When Phil became ill in the mid 1930s, he sold half the business to Stanley Wiedemer, a travelling salesman from Kansas City, and after Phil's death in 1937 Stanley bought the remaining half and moved his own family to Cleveland to run the company. Stanley's grandson Rick Wiedemer joined in 1969, a career that went on to span fifty years, and by around 2000 the fourth generation, Kristi, Jess and Eric Wiedemer, had begun taking on leadership roles themselves. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has manufactured and adapted Hinkley's designs for the UK and Europe, converting fittings like this one to 220 to 240V wiring with full CE certification.

Is this wall lantern dimmable? Yes, if you fit dimmable E14 bulbs the Trellis will work on a dimmer circuit. Standard, non dimmable bulbs give a fixed level of light instead.

Do bulbs come included? No, this lantern does not come with bulbs. It takes 3 x E14 bulbs, which you will need to buy separately before it can be used.
