The Sussex 5 Light Chandelier takes the traditional lantern shape and lightens it, with five candle style lights set around a slim glass column, all finished in brushed nickel. This is a genuinely large fitting: a chain drop that adjusts from 74cm to 223cm and a 66cm diameter. Please check these measurements against your space before ordering.

Brushed nickel with linen and glass

The frame is steel finished in brushed nickel, a soft, warm metallic tone that works equally well against light or dark walls. Each of the five arms carries a candle style light rising from clear glass, and the fitting is topped with a linen hard back shade. It sits comfortably alongside other brushed nickel or mixed metal pieces in the same room.

How it works

This is a hardwired ceiling fitting that takes 5 x E14 bulbs, not included, so you will need to add your own when you order. It is dimmable if you fit dimmable bulbs. This is a Class I fitting, which means it needs an earthed connection. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting.

Where it works best

Its scale suits dining rooms and living spaces with a bit of height, and the adjustable drop means it can also work well in a hallway with a tall ceiling or over a bed in a larger bedroom. Because the drop extends to 223cm, it is worth measuring your ceiling height before ordering.

The story behind Hinkley

Hinkley started small in 1922, when Phil R. Hinkley set up in Cleveland, Ohio, making outdoor lanterns, with a first catalogue of just fourteen designs. A run of large, adjustable chandeliers like the Sussex is a long way from those early lanterns, and that growth in scale and ambition came from the family that kept the business going after Phil's death in 1937, when Stanley Wiedemer, who had already bought half the company, took on the rest and moved his family to Ohio to run it. Stanley's grandson Rick Wiedemer Jr joined in 1969, and by around 2000 the fourth generation of Wiedemers, Kristi, Jess and Eric, were taking on leadership roles themselves. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has brought designs like this one to the UK, converting them to 220 to 240V wiring with full CE certification.

Is the Sussex chandelier dimmable? Yes, it dims when you fit dimmable E14 bulbs. Standard, non dimmable bulbs will not dim, even on a dimmer switch.

Do bulbs come with it? No. It takes 5 x E14 bulbs which are not supplied, so you will need to order your own alongside the fitting.

How big is this chandelier? The chain drop adjusts from 74cm up to 223cm, the diameter is 66cm, and the fitting stands 62.9cm tall, so it is worth measuring your ceiling and room before ordering.
