The frame and column detailing on this piece are finished in brushed nickel, a warm, low sheen metal that works equally well against pale and dark walls. How it works

This semi flush takes 3 x E14 bulbs, not included, so you will need to fit your own before switching it on. Choose dimmable E14 bulbs if you want to bring the light down for evenings, since the fitting only dims when a dimmable bulb is fitted. It is a Class I fitting, which means it needs an earthed connection. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting.

Where it works best

Its low profile makes it a good fit for bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms and hallways, particularly where the ceiling is too low for a pendant to hang at a comfortable height. The story behind Hinkley

Hinkley began in 1922 as a small outdoor lantern maker in Cleveland, Ohio, with a debut catalogue of just fourteen products. The Wiedemer family has run the company since the 1930s, when Stanley Wiedemer bought into the business and then took full ownership after Phil Hinkley's death in 1937. His grandson Rick joined in 1969 and spent fifty years at the company as its third generation. A design like the Sussex semi flush, with its linen shade and softer, more domestic detailing, reflects how far the range grew from that first line of lanterns. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has adapted Hinkley's designs for UK homes, converting fittings like this one to 220 to 240V wiring with full CE certification.

Is this light dimmable? Yes. This Sussex semi flush dims when fitted with dimmable E14 bulbs. Standard, non dimmable bulbs will not allow it to dim.
