A barn light with an industrial edge
The Hinkley Rigby single pendant takes its cue from the American barn light, a rugged, functional style of lantern, and reworks it as a chic interior fitting for the kitchen or dining table. Its mesh shade, cast socket cover and canopy detailing give it a retro industrial look. This version comes in Buckeye Bronze, a warm two tone finish that adds a slightly aged character to the metal.
Buckeye Bronze finish
Rigby is made from meshed steel and mild steel, then finished in Buckeye Bronze. The two tone effect brings out warm brown and bronze tones across the metal, giving it a lived in, slightly weathered look. It suits interiors that lean industrial or vintage, and pairs naturally with exposed brick, timber and other raw metal finishes.
How it works
Rigby holds a single E27 bulb within its mesh shade. The bulb isn't supplied, so you'll need to add one when you order. Light falls directly downward through the open base and filters softly through the mesh for a secondary glow. It's dimmable if you fit dimmable bulbs. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting. It's rated Class I, which means it needs to be properly earthed.
Where it works best
As a single drop light, Rigby works well over a kitchen island, a dining table or a compact breakfast nook, anywhere a single characterful pendant makes more sense than a row of downlights. Its drop adjusts from 19.7cm to 94.7cm, so it can be set at a height that suits your ceiling and table. It's equally at home in industrial loft interiors or more traditional kitchens and dining rooms looking for a bit of vintage warmth.
The story behind Hinkley
Hinkley's story starts with outdoor light. Phil R. Hinkley founded the company in Cleveland, Ohio in 1922, with a debut catalogue of just 14 lanterns for porches and barns. Rigby, with its mesh shade and cast socket covers, echoes that same rugged, functional lantern character, just reworked for a kitchen or dining table. Stanley Wiedemer bought into the business in the 1930s and took full ownership after Phil's death in 1937, and his grandson Rick Wiedemer carried the company forward for a further fifty years from 1969 onwards. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has adapted designs like Rigby for the UK, converting them to 220 to 240V wiring and full CE certification.
