The Plantation 10 Light Chandelier is the largest fitting in Hinkley's Plantation collection, with ten arms of pineapple shaped clear optic glass fanning out from a central stem for a genuinely grand look. This is a large fitting, with a drop that adjusts from 109cm up to 413.8cm and a diameter of 83.8cm, so it needs a hallway, stairwell or dining room with real height to spare. Because the antique nickel finish is a hand applied metal treatment, expect some gentle variation in tone from piece to piece, and be aware that screens can show metal finishes differently to how they look in person.

Polished antique nickel finish

Polished Antique Nickel gives the steel frame a bright, faintly weathered tone that suits both traditional and transitional interiors. The same elaborate cast detailing runs through the arms and centre column, with linen covered candle sleeves adding a soft texture against the metal and clear optic glass. This design is also available in a polished chrome finish, if you would prefer a cooler, brighter metal tone.

How it works

Ten arms hold E14 bulbs, so light spreads outward through the optic glass rather than pooling downward from one source. Bulbs are not supplied, so you will need ten E14 bulbs, choosing dimmable bulbs if you want the chandelier to dim. The fitting is wired to Class I standards, which means it requires an earthed connection. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting.

Where it works best

Given its scale, this chandelier works best in a double height hallway, a stairwell, or a large dining room or living room where there is enough vertical space for all ten arms to read as one composition. It suits period and traditional interiors particularly well, sitting alongside dark wood, plaster ceiling roses or panelled walls.

The story behind Hinkley

Hinkley started small. Phil R. Hinkley founded the company in Cleveland, Ohio in 1922 with a debut catalogue of just fourteen outdoor lanterns, a world away from a ten arm chandelier like this one. When Phil became ill with tuberculosis in the mid 1930s, he sold half the business to Stanley Wiedemer, a travelling salesman from Kansas City, and after Phil died in 1937 Stanley bought the rest and moved his family to Cleveland to run it. Stanley's grandson Rick Wiedemer joined the business in 1969 and spent fifty years there, through the decades when ornate, old world designs like the Plantation range took shape. Around 2000, the fourth generation, Kristi, Jess and Eric Wiedemer, began taking on leadership roles. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has adapted Hinkley's designs for the UK, including converting large fittings like this one to 220 to 240V wiring with full CE certification.
