The Plantation 1 Light Small Wall Lantern in Museum Black is the compact option in Hinkley's Plantation range, sized for a doorway, porch or gate pillar where a full sized lantern would be too much. It keeps the same pineapple shaped optic glass and cast detailing as the rest of the range, at a compact Height 35.6cm, Width 15.2cm and Depth 17.3cm.

Museum Black is a deep, matt black finish applied over durable cast aluminium, chosen for the way it stands up to weather without needing much upkeep. The pineapple shaped optic glass panel sits within intricately cast framework, a detail that runs through the whole Plantation collection. It works well against brick, render or painted timber, and pairs easily with black door furniture and house numbers.

How it works

This lantern takes a single E27 LED bulb, which is not supplied, so you will need to add one to your order. It is dimmable if you fit dimmable LED bulbs. A standard, non dimmable bulb will not dim, even on a dimmer switch. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting. Separately, it is a Class I fitting, which means it needs to be properly earthed as part of that installation.

Where it works best

This is an outdoor fitting, rated IP44 for weatherproof use in exposed but sheltered spots. It suits a front door, a porch, either side of a garage, or a gate pillar, and copes well with rain and damp conditions. Because it is the small option in the Plantation range, it works particularly well on a narrower porch or a doorway where a larger lantern would feel too heavy for the space.

The story behind Hinkley

Hinkley began in 1922, when Phil R. Hinkley started a small outdoor lantern company in Cleveland, Ohio, with a debut catalogue of just fourteen products. This small wall lantern sits close to that original idea of a well made, modestly scaled outdoor light. After Phil fell ill in the mid 1930s he sold half the business to Stanley Wiedemer, a travelling salesman from Kansas City, and Stanley took full ownership when Phil died in 1937, moving his family to Cleveland to run the company. The Wiedemer family has stayed at the helm ever since, and since 2012 Elstead Lighting has manufactured and adapted Hinkley's designs for the UK, including this lantern, converting them to 220 to 240V wiring and securing full CE certification.
