The Hinkley Plantation 1 Light Small Wall Lantern in Burnished Bronze is the smaller size in the Plantation range, sized for a modest porch, entrance or gate pillar rather than a grand one. A panel of etched amber optic glass sits inside a cast aluminium frame, giving this small outdoor wall lantern a warmer, more textured look than the Museum Black version in the same range. At 35.6cm high, it suits a tighter wall space without overwhelming the brick or stone around it.

Burnished Bronze finish

Burnished Bronze is a warm, deep bronze tone with a slightly weathered character, applied over durable cast aluminium. The etched amber optic glass carries the pineapple style moulding that runs through the whole Plantation range. It sits comfortably against brick, stone, timber and darker painted doors, and reads warmer than the cooler tone of the Museum Black finish.

How it works

This lantern takes a single E27 LED bulb, which isn't supplied, so you'll need to add one to your order. It will only dim if you fit a dimmable bulb and pair it with a compatible dimmer switch. It's wired to Class I, which means it needs an earth connection. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting.

Where it works best

Rated IP44, this lantern is built to cope with the weather at an exterior wall, so it suits a porch, front door surround, gate pillar or covered walkway. It isn't intended for a spot with full, direct exposure to driving rain, but shelter under a porch roof or a covered doorway works well. Choose this Small size for a modest opening, or step up to the Medium Plantation wall lantern if your entrance needs a bit more presence.

The story behind Hinkley

Hinkley began in 1922, when Phil R. Hinkley started making outdoor lanterns in Cleveland, Ohio. His first catalogue held just 14 products, modest lanterns not unlike this small Plantation piece. When Phil's health failed in the mid 1930s he sold half the business to Stanley Wiedemer, a travelling salesman, who bought the rest after Phil died in 1937 and moved his own family to Cleveland to keep the company going. Stanley's grandson Rick Wiedemer Jr joined in 1969 for a career spanning fifty years, and by around 2000 the fourth generation, Kristi, Jess and Eric Wiedemer, had begun taking on leadership roles of their own. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has manufactured and adapted Hinkley's designs for the UK and Europe, including this lantern, converting them to 220 to 240V wiring with full CE certification.

Is this lantern dimmable? It will only dim if you fit a dimmable LED bulb and pair it with a compatible dimmer switch. A standard, non dimmable bulb won't respond to a dimmer.
