A quieter take on the Plantation lantern

The Hinkley Plantation 1 Light Medium Wall Lantern in Museum Black is the same outdoor wall lantern from Hinkley's Plantation collection, finished in a flat, deep black rather than the range's usual metallic tones. It keeps the collection's scale and cast detailing, standing 54.1cm high, 20.3cm wide and 27.5cm deep, but the matt black finish gives it a more restrained look for a period or contemporary doorway, porch or garage wall.

Cast aluminium and optic glass

This lantern is built from cast aluminium finished in Museum Black, with a clear optic glass panel that gives it a faceted, cut glass texture rather than plain flat glazing. The dark, matt finish sits well against brick, render or painted timber, and pairs easily with black door furniture or other exterior fittings in the same tone.

How it works

The lantern takes a single E27 LED bulb, which is not supplied, so you will need to order one separately. It is dimmable if you fit a dimmable bulb and pair it with a compatible dimmer switch. This is a Class I fitting, which means it must be earthed. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting.

The story behind Hinkley

Hinkley began in Cleveland, Ohio in 1922, when Phil R. Hinkley started out making outdoor lanterns much like this one, with a debut catalogue of just 14 products. When Phil became ill with tuberculosis in the mid 1930s, he sold half the business to Stanley Wiedemer, a travelling salesman from Kansas City, and after Phil died in 1937, Stanley bought the remaining half and moved his family to Cleveland to run the company himself. His grandson Rick Wiedemer Jr joined the business in 1969 for a fifty year career, and by around 2000 the fourth generation, Kristi, Jess and Eric Wiedemer, had begun taking on leadership roles. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has manufactured and adapted Hinkley's designs, including this lantern, for the UK and Europe, converting them to 220 to 240V wiring with full CE certification.
