The Middlefield 5 Light Chandelier is the boldest piece in Hinkley's Middlefield range, combining five lights with solid distressed wood and dark steel. It is a genuinely large fitting, with a drop that adjusts from 87.3cm up to 341.3cm and a diameter of 50.8cm, so it is worth checking your ceiling height and table size before you order. The distressed wood grain also means no two chandeliers are identical, and colour can look slightly different on screen compared with in person.

Iron Rust wood and steel

This Iron Rust variant pairs the rough, textured surface of solid distressed wood with dark steel banding and fittings, so it reads as reclaimed and lived in rather than freshly made. A pear shaped wood finial can be hung inside or outside the frame, giving you a small way to adjust the silhouette to suit your space. It sits comfortably alongside raw or reclaimed timber, wrought iron, and other pieces with a farmhouse or industrial edge.

How it works

The Middlefield 5 Light Chandelier takes 5 x E14 bulbs, which are not supplied, so you will need to add five suitable bulbs to your order. It is dimmable if you fit dimmable bulbs. This is a Class I fitting, which needs to be earthed. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting.

Where it works best

With a maximum drop of over three metres, this chandelier suits a room with real height, such as a double height dining space, a stairwell, or an open plan kitchen diner with tall ceilings. Set closer to its minimum drop, it also works well over a large dining table in a more standard height room. Its scale and rustic wood and steel finish make it a natural fit for farmhouse, industrial, or country style kitchens and dining rooms.

The story behind Hinkley

Hinkley started small. Phil R. Hinkley founded the company in Cleveland, Ohio in 1922 with a debut catalogue of just fourteen outdoor lanterns. A chandelier on the scale of this Middlefield is a long way from that first modest range, but the same family thread runs through it. Stanley Wiedemer bought into the business in the 1930s and took it on fully after Phil's death in 1937, and his descendants have run it ever since, with a third generation joining in 1969 and a fourth taking on leadership roles from around 2000. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has manufactured and adapted Hinkley's designs for the UK and Europe, converting fittings like this one to 220 to 240V wiring with full CE certification.
