Manhattan takes its cue from the lanterns that once lit railway platforms, then strips the design back to its simplest lines. This is the single small wall lantern in the range, sized for a front door, porch or side entrance rather than a grand entranceway. The result is a small outdoor wall lantern that feels classic without looking fussy.

Oil Rubbed Bronze finish

This lantern comes in Oil Rubbed Bronze, a finish that's hand painted rather than sprayed, so the depth of colour can vary slightly from one fitting to the next. It's applied over a die-cast aluminium body with clear glass panels, a combination chosen to hold the Manhattan's crisp lines and to cope with life outdoors.

How it works

This wall lantern takes a single E27 bulb, which isn't included, so you'll need to add one when you order. It's dimmable if you fit a dimmable bulb. It's wall mounted, casting light outward and downward around a doorway. It's a Class I fitting, wired to earth. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting.

Where it works best

Manhattan is IP44 rated, which means it copes with rain and damp rather than being fully submersible, so it suits porches, covered entranceways and other sheltered or partially exposed spots outdoors. It works well either side of a front door, at a side entrance, or anywhere you want a warm, classic bronze porch light greeting you on the way in.

The story behind Hinkley

Hinkley started out in 1922 as a small outdoor lantern maker in Cleveland, Ohio, founded by Phil R. Hinkley, whose first catalogue ran to just 14 products. A design like Manhattan sits close to those roots, since outdoor lanterns were the category the company was built on from day one. Phil Hinkley died in 1937, and Stanley Wiedemer, who'd bought half the business a few years earlier after Phil fell ill, then bought the rest and moved his family from Kansas City to Cleveland to run the company. Three more generations of Wiedemers have led it since, from Rick Wiedemer Jr in 1969 to Kristi, Jess and Eric from around 2000. Elstead Lighting has manufactured and adapted Hinkley's designs for the UK and Europe since 2012, including this lantern, converting them to 220 to 240V wiring and giving them full CE certification.

Is this lantern dimmable? Yes, the Manhattan wall lantern is dimmable as long as you fit a dimmable E27 bulb. A standard non-dimmable bulb won't allow dimming, even on a dimmer switch.

Does it come with a bulb? No, this lantern takes a single E27 bulb which isn't included, so you'll need to buy one separately before it can be used.

Is it suitable for a fully exposed outdoor wall? It's IP44 rated, which protects against rain and splashing water rather than direct, sustained exposure, so it's best suited to porches, covered entrances and other sheltered or partially exposed outdoor spots rather than a completely open wall.

Will the finish look exactly like the photos? The Oil Rubbed Bronze finish is hand painted, so there can be small, natural variations in colour depth from one fitting to another, and screens can also render bronze tones slightly differently to how they look in person.
