The Manhattan range comes in three sizes, and this wall lantern is the medium one, sitting between the small and large versions. It has the look of a classic train station light without taking over a porch or doorway, which is why it is the size most people reach for. In Oil Rubbed Bronze, it brings a warm, aged tone to an entrance rather than a flat, uniform finish.

Oil Rubbed Bronze finish

The Oil Rubbed Bronze finish is hand painted onto die-cast aluminium, so the colour has some natural depth and variation rather than sitting as one flat tone. Clear glass panels let the light spread cleanly. It pairs well with brick, stone, timber and painted render, and sits nicely alongside black or bronze door furniture and house numbers.

How it works

This lantern takes one E27 LED bulb, which is not supplied, so you will need to add one to your order. It is dimmable if you fit dimmable bulbs. The fitting is Class I, which means it needs to be properly earthed. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting.

Where it works best

Manhattan is IP44 rated, which means it is built to cope with rain and damp air. That makes this medium lantern a good fit for porches, front doors, gateways and other covered or partly exposed exterior spots. It is designed for outdoor use rather than as a bathroom or wet room fitting.

The story behind Hinkley

Hinkley started out in 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio, as a small outdoor lantern maker, with a debut catalogue of just 14 products. A wall lantern like this one sits close to that original idea: a simple, well made light built to stand outside a front door through all weathers. Ownership passed to the Wiedemer family from the 1930s onward, and since 2012 Elstead Lighting has adapted Hinkley's designs, including this Manhattan lantern, for the UK market, converting them to 220 to 240V wiring and securing full CE certification.

Questions People Ask

Is the Manhattan wall lantern dimmable? Yes, it works on a dimmer switch as long as you fit dimmable LED bulbs. Standard non dimmable bulbs will not dim even on a dimmer circuit.

Does it come with a bulb? No, this fitting takes one E27 LED bulb and you will need to buy this separately, so you can choose the brightness and colour temperature you prefer.

Can I fit this myself? We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting. It is a Class I fitting, which means it needs to be properly earthed as part of the installation.

Is this lantern suitable for outside use in the rain? Yes, it is IP44 rated, which means it is protected against splashing water and light rain, making it suitable for porches, front doors and other covered or partly sheltered exterior spots.

Will the finish look exactly the same as the photos? The Oil Rubbed Bronze finish is hand painted, so there is some natural variation in tone from one lantern to the next, and screens can also render colour slightly differently.
