This is the largest of Hinkley's Manhattan wall lanterns, built with the scale and presence of an old American train station light. It keeps the same clean lines as the smaller Manhattan lanterns, but the extra size gives it enough weight to anchor a grand entrance, a wide porch or a taller stretch of wall.

Oil Rubbed Bronze finish

The lantern is finished in Oil Rubbed Bronze, a warm, dark bronze with brown undertones. It sits over a die cast aluminium body with a clear glass panel, a pairing that reads as classic and industrial at the same time and works well against brick, render or painted timber.

How it works

This wall lantern takes 1 x E27 LED bulb, which isn't included, so you'll need to add one when you order. It's dimmable if you fit dimmable bulbs and pair them with a compatible dimmer switch. The fitting is wall mounted and wired in. It's Class I, which means it needs to be properly earthed. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting.

Where it works best

With an IP44 rating, this lantern is built to handle life outdoors, including splashing rain, which makes it a good match for porches, front doors, garden walls and other sheltered exterior spots. Its scale suits a bigger entrance or a taller wall where a smaller lantern would get lost.

The story behind Hinkley

Hinkley started out making nothing but outdoor lanterns. Phil R. Hinkley founded the company in Cleveland, Ohio in 1922, with a debut catalogue of just 14 products, all of them porch and entrance lights. That single minded start is easy to see in a piece like this Manhattan lantern, which is still, a century on, doing the job the company was originally built around. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has manufactured and adapted Hinkley's designs for the UK and Europe, converting fittings like this one to 220 to 240V wiring with full CE certification.

Is this lantern dimmable? Yes, as long as you fit dimmable LED bulbs and pair them with a compatible dimmer switch. Standard, non dimmable bulbs will not dim even on a dimmer circuit.

Does it come with a bulb? No. It takes 1 x E27 LED bulb, which is sold separately.

Is it weatherproof enough for a porch or front door? Yes. It has an IP44 rating, which means it is protected against splashing water, so it suits porches, entrances and other sheltered outdoor spots.
