A lantern that swings gently from the porch ceiling
The Hinkley Manhattan Single Chain Lantern hangs from a chain rather than sitting flush against a wall, adding a small sense of movement to a covered porch or entrance. It carries the same train station inspired silhouette as the rest of the Manhattan range, in a compact single light size suited to a porch ceiling rather than a wide veranda.
Oil Rubbed Bronze finish
Each Oil Rubbed Bronze lantern is finished by hand, so the depth of colour can vary slightly from one piece to the next, and screens don't always render it exactly true either. It sits over a die cast aluminium frame with a clear glass panel, giving the bronze tone real weight against brick, render or painted timber.
How it works
This lantern takes one E27 LED bulb, which isn't included, so you'll need to add one to your order. It will work with dimmable bulbs if you'd like that option, though the fitting itself has no built in dimmer. It's a Class I fitting, wired with an earth connection. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting.
Where it works best
With an IP23 rating, this lantern is built for covered outdoor spaces rather than fully exposed ones. It works well hung from a porch ceiling, an entrance canopy or a covered veranda, somewhere sheltered from direct rain and wind. Its chain hang suits a spot with a little height so it can hang properly.
The story behind Hinkley
Hinkley started out in 1922 as a small outdoor lantern maker in Cleveland, Ohio, founded by Phil R. Hinkley with a debut catalogue of just 14 products. A lantern like this one sits close to that original outdoor focus, even though the company has grown considerably since. After Phil's death in 1937, Stanley Wiedemer, who had bought into the business in the mid 1930s, took over and moved his family to Cleveland to run it, beginning three generations of Wiedemer family leadership. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has manufactured and adapted Hinkley's designs for the UK and Europe, converting fittings like this Manhattan lantern to 220 to 240V wiring with full CE certification.
