A hanging lantern for covered porches and tall entrances
The Huntersfield Single Small Chain Lantern is the hanging version of Hinkley's Huntersfield porch light, suspended on a chain rather than fixed flush to a wall. It's a large fitting, with a drop that adjusts from 37.4cm to 192cm, so it can sit high under a tall porch ceiling or drop low over a more modest entrance.
Black aluminium and brass with seeded glass
It's made from aluminium and brass, finished in black, with clear seeded glass panels that soften the light and give it a slightly aged, traditional look. The black finish sits well against brick, render or painted timber, and it matches the rest of the Huntersfield range if you're lighting a porch and a nearby wall together.
How it works
This is a single light fitting that takes one E27 bulb, not supplied, so you'll need to add one to your order. It's dimmable if you fit a dimmable bulb, though the fitting itself has no built in dimmer. It hangs from an adjustable chain, which is what lets the drop be shortened or lengthened to suit your ceiling. It's wired as Class I, which means it needs an earth connection. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting.
Where it works best
Rated IP44, it's weatherproof enough for covered outdoor spaces that still get some exposure to the elements, such as porches, verandas and entranceways. It isn't built for a fully open, unsheltered spot, so keep it under a roof or canopy. Its height and long adjustable drop also suit porches with higher ceilings, where a flush wall lantern would sit too low.
The story behind Hinkley
Hinkley started in 1922 as a small outdoor lantern maker in Cleveland, Ohio, with a debut catalogue of just 14 products. A hanging porch lantern like this one sits close to that original idea of the brand. Phil Hinkley's illness in the mid 1930s brought travelling salesman Stanley Wiedemer in as a half owner, and when Phil died in 1937, Stanley bought the rest of the business and moved his family from Kansas City to Cleveland to run it. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has adapted Hinkley's designs for the UK, including this Huntersfield lantern, converting them to 220 to 240V wiring with full CE certification.

Questions People Ask
Is this light dimmable? Yes, it's dimmable if you fit a dimmable E27 bulb. The fitting itself has no built in dimmer, so it's the bulb you choose that determines whether it dims.
Does it come with a bulb? No, this lantern takes one E27 bulb which isn't included, so you'll need to add one to your order before it can be used.
How big is this lantern? It measures 26.9cm high and 17.8cm wide, and it hangs on a chain with an adjustable drop from 37.4cm up to 192cm, so you can set the height to suit your porch ceiling.
Can I install this myself? We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting. It's wired as Class I, which means it needs to be properly earthed as part of the installation.
Is it suitable for a fully open, unsheltered spot outdoors? Not ideally. It's rated IP44, which means it can handle damp air and light splashing but not direct, driving rain, so it's best kept under a porch roof, veranda or canopy.
