The Harper Small Semi-Flush is a compact ceiling light from Hinkley, pairing a ring of opal etched glass with a Polished Chrome finished steel frame. It sits close to the ceiling rather than hanging down, giving Harper's traditional silhouette a neater, more contemporary edge, and its smaller scale makes it an easy fit for rooms where a full sized flush light would feel too heavy.

The steel ring carries a Polished Chrome finish, bright and reflective, with decorative knobs picking out Harper's period styling. The opal etched glass diffuses light evenly rather than casting sharp points, so the fitting reads as a soft, even glow rather than a row of visible bulbs. The same design is also available in a Nickel finish, if you prefer a warmer tone.

How it works

This is a semi-flush fitting, so it sits just below the ceiling rather than flat against it, giving a little more depth than Harper's fully flush version. It takes 3 x E27 LED bulbs, which aren't included, so you'll need to add your own. It's dimmable if you fit dimmable bulbs. The fitting is rated Class I. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting.

Where it works best

Its small scale suits hallways, kitchens and dining rooms, anywhere a compact ceiling light with some retro character is wanted rather than a large central pendant. It also works well in rooms with lower ceilings, where a projecting pendant would sit too low.

The story behind Hinkley

Hinkley started small. When Phil R. Hinkley founded the company in Cleveland, Ohio in 1922, its debut catalogue held just 14 products, all outdoor lanterns. The Wiedemer family bought into the business in the 1930s and took over fully after Phil's death in 1937, steering the company through decades of growth. Around 2000, a fourth generation of Wiedemers, Kristi, Jess and Eric, began taking on leadership roles, and by 2020 the company had simplified its name from Hinkley Lighting to simply Hinkley. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has brought designs like this Harper semi-flush to the UK, converting each fitting to 220 to 240V wiring and full CE certification.
