The Harper Medium Semi-Flush is the larger version of Hinkley's retro inspired ceiling light, pairing a Heritage Brass ring with an opal glass shade. It sits close to the ceiling rather than hanging down, so it works well in rooms where headroom is tight but you still want a fitting with real presence.

The frame and decorative knobs are finished in Heritage Brass, a warm, slightly aged tone that reads as brass without looking too shiny or new. The opal etched glass shade sits within that brass ring and spreads the light evenly rather than casting it in one direction, so the fitting reads as a soft glowing disc rather than a row of visible bulbs.

How it works

This semi-flush light takes 3 x E27 bulbs, which are not included, so you will need to add your own. It is dimmable if you use dimmable bulbs. It is rated Class I, which means it must be earthed. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting.

Where it works best

This medium size works well as a kitchen ceiling light or dining room ceiling light, and also suits a hallway where a low profile brass fitting is needed. It's a good option anywhere you want more scale than a small semi-flush but don't have the drop height for a pendant.

The story behind Hinkley

Hinkley traces back to 1922, when Phil R. Hinkley started the company in Cleveland, Ohio, with a debut catalogue of just 14 outdoor lanterns. The Wiedemer family has run the business since Stanley Wiedemer bought it outright after Phil's death in 1937, and it has stayed a family concern through three further generations since. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has adapted Hinkley's American designs, including this Harper range, for UK homes, converting them to 220 to 240V wiring with full CE certification. The Medium Semi-Flush is one of the larger results of that work, built for rooms that call for more scale than the smaller sizes in the same collection.

Is the Harper Medium Semi-Flush dimmable? Yes, as long as you fit dimmable E27 bulbs and use a compatible dimmer switch. Bulbs that aren't dimmable will not dim.
