The Harper Medium Semi-Flush takes the same retro inspired shape as the smaller Harper light and gives it more presence. A prominent brass ring frames a dome of clear seeded glass, with three E27 light sources sitting behind decorative knobs. It's a semi-flush ceiling light built for a room that can carry a bit more scale than a hallway pendant, finished throughout in Heritage Brass.

Heritage Brass gives the steel ring and its decorative knobs a warm, slightly aged glow rather than a hard polished shine. The clear seeded glass has a gentle, bubbled texture that catches and softens the light rather than showing it as one bright point. Together the two finishes sit somewhere between traditional and mid century, and pair well with brass door furniture, warm wood tones or dark painted cabinetry.

How it works

This semi-flush fitting sits close to the ceiling rather than hanging down on a cord or chain, so it suits rooms with limited headroom. It takes three E27 bulbs, which are not included. It can be dimmed if you fit dimmable bulbs and use it with a compatible dimmer switch. This is a Class I fitting, wired to mains voltage. The story behind Hinkley

Hinkley began in 1922, when Phil R. Hinkley started out making lanterns in Cleveland, Ohio, with a debut catalogue of just fourteen products. Stanley Wiedemer, a travelling salesman, bought into the business in the 1930s and took it over fully after Phil's death in 1937, moving his own family to Cleveland to run it. His grandson Rick Wiedemer joined in 1969 and went on to lead the company for fifty years, and by around 2000 a fourth generation, Kristi, Jess and Eric Wiedemer, had begun taking on leadership roles of their own. A design like this Harper Medium Semi-Flush, offered in more than one size, reflects that same family habit of refining a shape across a range rather than starting from scratch each time. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has adapted Hinkley's designs, including this one, for UK wiring and full CE certification.
