The Hampton 3 light semi-flush takes the same clean, rectangular frame and linen drum shade as the rest of Hinkley's Hampton collection, but sits close to the ceiling instead of hanging down, so it works where a pendant can't. It's larger than a typical semi-flush, with a 50.8cm diameter and a height of 30.5cm, so it's worth checking that against your ceiling space before you order.

The frame is finished in Antique Nickel over mild steel, with an acrylic etched lens sitting beneath an off-white linen drum shade. How it works

This semi-flush takes 3 x E14 bulbs, which aren't included, so you'll need to add your own. It's dimmable if you fit dimmable bulbs, though the fitting itself doesn't include a dimmer switch. It's Class I rated, so it needs to be properly earthed. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting.

Where it works best

Because it sits close to the ceiling rather than hanging down, this Hampton semi-flush works well in rooms with restricted head height, such as hallways, landings and smaller bedrooms. It also suits living rooms and dining rooms where a low, even spread of light is wanted without a pendant taking up headroom.

The story behind Hinkley

Hinkley started in 1922, when Phil R. Hinkley began making outdoor lanterns in Cleveland, Ohio, with a debut catalogue of just 14 products. After Phil became ill with tuberculosis in the mid 1930s, he sold half the business to Stanley Wiedemer, a travelling salesman from Kansas City, and after Phil's death in 1937 Stanley bought the rest and moved his family to Cleveland to run it himself. His grandson Rick Wiedemer Jr joined the business in 1969, taking it into a third generation, and by around 2000 a fourth generation, Kristi, Jess and Eric Wiedemer, had begun taking on leadership roles too. The Hampton collection, this semi-flush included, reflects how far that small lantern maker has grown. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has adapted Hinkley's designs for the UK and Europe, converting fittings like this one to 220 to 240V wiring with full CE certification.
