Black steel and parchment style shades

The welded frame is made from steel and finished in a flat, confident Black. Either side of it sit a pair of shades in polycotton fabric with a soft, off white parchment look, so the light coming through the fabric reads warm rather than harsh. It works well against pale walls, exposed brick or timber ceilings, where the black frame can stand out as a feature rather than disappear into the background.

How it works

This is a four light duo mount. Hang it as a pendant using the supplied rods, or remove them to fit it closer to the ceiling as a semi-flush light where headroom is tighter. It takes four E14 bulbs, which are not included, so add these to your order. The fitting will dim if you fit dimmable E14 bulbs on a compatible dimmer switch. This fitting is Class I, which means it has an earth connection. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting.

Where it works best

The scale and Black finish make this a good match for larger rooms that can take a bit of drama overhead, such as dining rooms, living rooms and bedrooms with reasonable ceiling height. The semi-flush option also works well over a stairwell or in a hallway, where you want a striking fitting but don't have room to hang it low.

The story behind Hinkley

Hinkley started out in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1922, when Phil R Hinkley launched the company with a debut catalogue of just fourteen outdoor lanterns. A fabric shaded duo mount like this one is a long way from that first catalogue, but it is part of the same continuous business. Stanley Wiedemer, a travelling salesman, had bought half the company by the mid 1930s and took on the rest after Phil Hinkley died in 1937, moving his family to Cleveland to run it. His descendants still lead the company today, and it broadened its name from Hinkley Lighting to simply Hinkley between 2019 and 2020 as it expanded into ceiling fans alongside lighting. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has adapted Hinkley's designs, including this one, for UK wiring and CE certification.
