The Hinkley Gentry 6 Light Large Pendant in Pewter is built for spaces with real height, six candle style lights arranged around a circular steel frame with clear bent glass panels. It is also a genuinely large fitting, with an adjustable drop from 73.8cm up to 381cm and a weight of 11.5kg, so it suits stairwells, tall entrance halls and dining rooms with high ceilings rather than a standard sized room.

The Pewter finish

Pewter gives this pendant a softer, more muted tone than a bright chrome or brass finish, closer to brushed steel than a polished metal. The clear bent glass panels and candle chasers repeat six times around the frame, so the finish reads consistently across the whole fitting. It pairs well with warm wood tones, stone flooring and other steel or graphite toned fittings nearby.

How it works

This pendant hangs from a ceiling rose on an adjustable chain, which is what allows the drop to run from 73.8cm up to 381cm. It takes six E14 bulbs, which are not supplied, so you will need to order these separately. Dimmable bulbs will let you dim this fitting, though the pendant itself has no built in dimmer switch. It is a Class I fitting, which means it needs an earthed supply. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting.

Where it works best

Its scale and long adjustable drop make it well suited to stairwells, landings and entrance halls where the ceiling sits well above a standard height, as well as dining rooms and kitchens looking for a central, traditional feature light. Because the drop can also come right down to 73.8cm at its shortest, it can still work over a dining table in a room with a lower ceiling once the chain is shortened at fitting.

The story behind Hinkley

Hinkley started out in 1922 as a small outdoor lantern maker in Cleveland, Ohio, with a debut catalogue of just fourteen products. A fitting on the scale of this Gentry pendant, six lights and a drop that can run to well over three metres, is a long way from that first catalogue. The company grew across four generations of the Hinkley and Wiedemer families, and between 2019 and 2020 it dropped "Lighting" from its name to reflect a range that had grown well beyond its original lanterns. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has manufactured and adapted Hinkley's designs for the UK and Europe, converting fittings like this one to 220 to 240V wiring with full CE certification.
