The Freeport medium wall lantern brings a traditional coach lantern silhouette to modern doorways, porches and garden walls. This is the mid size option in the Freeport range, sized for standard front doors, back doors and side entrances where a lantern needs to be seen clearly without dominating the wall.

Textured White with clear seeded glass

The body is made from a weather resistant composite finished in Textured White, a soft, chalky white that reads as coastal rather than clinical. Clear seeded glass panels let the light spread outward while adding a faint texture that catches the eye by day. It pairs easily with white, cream or pale grey render, weatherboard and painted brick.

How it works

This lantern takes a single E27 LED bulb, which isn't supplied, so you'll need to add one to your order. Fit a dimmable bulb and it will dim; with a standard bulb it works as a fixed light. It's rated Class I, which means it requires an earth connection. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting.

Where it works best

With an IP44 rating, this Freeport lantern is built to cope with the weather at a front door, back door, porch or garden wall, including spots that catch some rain. It isn't designed for direct water jets or submersion, so keep it clear of those conditions.

The story behind Hinkley

Hinkley started out in 1922 when Phil R. Hinkley began making outdoor lanterns in Cleveland, Ohio, with a debut catalogue of just 14 products. A century on, the Freeport carries that same brief forward: a dependable lantern for the outside of the house. Phil sold half the business to travelling salesman Stanley Wiedemer in the mid 1930s, and after Phil's death in 1937 Stanley bought the rest and moved his family to Cleveland to run it. Four generations of Wiedemers have led the company since, most recently Kristi, Jess and Eric Wiedemer. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has manufactured and adapted Hinkley's designs for the UK, converting fittings like this one to 220 to 240V wiring and full CE certification.

Is this lantern dimmable? Yes, if you fit a dimmable LED bulb and pair it with a compatible dimmer switch. With a standard non dimmable bulb, it works as a fixed light.

Does it come with a bulb? No. It takes a single E27 LED bulb, which you'll need to buy separately.

Is it suitable for a front door that gets rain? Yes. It has an IP44 rating, which covers splashing water from any direction, making it suitable for porches, doorways and garden walls exposed to typical UK weather.

Can I install this myself? We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting, since it connects to your home's electrics and is rated Class I with an earth connection.
