The Hinkley Freeport is a single light wall lantern with the traditional, slightly boxy silhouette that outdoor lantern designs have carried for decades. This medium size sits comfortably either side of a front door or along a porch wall, and the Textured Black finish gives it a solid, understated presence rather than a shiny, obviously new look.

Textured Black finish and weather resistant build

This Freeport is made from a weather resistant composite and finished in Textured Black, a matte, slightly grained black that reads as ironwork without the upkeep metal would need outdoors. Clear seeded glass panels sit in each side, adding a gentle, handmade texture to the light while still letting it spread. Textured Black pairs easily with brick, render, timber or stone, and sits well next to black door furniture, house numbers or downlights.

How it works

It's a single bulb wall lantern that takes one E27 LED bulb, sold separately, and fixes directly to an exterior wall using the bracket on the back plate. Dimming is possible if you fit a dimmable E27 bulb and pair it with a compatible dimmer switch, but it isn't dimmable with a standard bulb. This is a Class I fitting, so it needs to be earthed as part of the installation. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting.

Where it works best

With an IP44 rating, the Freeport is built to handle rain and damp air, which makes it a good fit for a front door, a covered or open porch, a garden wall or anywhere else on the outside of the house where it will be exposed to the weather. It isn't designed for indoor rooms such as bathrooms, but works well anywhere outdoors that could use a warm, traditional point of light.

The story behind Hinkley

Hinkley started out in 1922 as a small outdoor lantern maker in Cleveland, Ohio, with Phil R. Hinkley's first catalogue holding just 14 products. A lantern like this one sits close to that original focus: simple, well made fittings for the outside of a house. The company stayed in the Wiedemer family for generations, from Stanley Wiedemer taking over in the 1930s through to his grandson Rick joining in 1969 and a fourth generation, Kristi, Jess and Eric, later stepping into leadership. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has adapted designs like the Freeport for UK homes, rewiring them for 220 to 240V and certifying them to CE standards.
