This is the largest size in Hinkley's Freeport collection, finished in a deep Textured Black rather than the softer white option. The bigger scale and darker colour give it a strong presence on large doorways, garages or long stretches of garden wall.

Textured Black finish and composite build

The body is made from a weather resistant composite, built to cope with rain and UV without fading or corroding the way metal can. Clear seeded glass panels sit within the black frame, letting light spill out while keeping a slightly uneven, handcrafted texture. The dark finish pairs well with black ironwork, dark render or exposed brick.

How it works

This lantern takes a single E27 LED bulb, which isn't included so you'll need to add one when you order. It's dimmable if you fit a dimmable LED bulb, though you'll also need a dimmer switch rated for LED loads. It's a Class I fitting, which means it needs to be properly earthed. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting.

Where it works best

With an IP44 rating, this lantern is built for outdoor use, including spots with some exposure to wind and rain, such as an open porch, garage wall or exterior doorway. Its larger scale suits wider walls or bigger entrances, where a smaller lantern would look lost, making it a good match for grander doors, garages or long runs of garden wall.

The story behind Hinkley

Hinkley started in 1922 as a small outdoor lantern maker in Cleveland, Ohio, with a debut catalogue of just fourteen products. Over a century on, the Freeport range carries on that outdoor lantern tradition, now offered in a full spread of sizes from small to this large Textured Black version. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has manufactured and adapted Hinkley's designs for the UK and Europe, converting them to 220 to 240V wiring with full CE certification, so a piece rooted in a small American workshop can be fitted safely on a British wall today.

Questions People Ask

Is this lantern dimmable? Yes. It works with compatible dimmable LED bulbs, but you'll also need a dimmer switch rated for LED loads for it to dim properly.

Does it come with a bulb? No. It takes a single E27 LED bulb, which you'll need to buy separately before you can use the light.

Is it suitable for a covered porch or an exposed wall? Yes. With an IP44 rating, it's designed for outdoor use, including spots that get some rain or wind, such as an open porch or an exterior wall.
