The Hinkley Dax is a small, streamlined mini pendant with its light source built into the fitting itself, rather than left to a separate bulb. In Black, it has a neat, understated profile that suits spaces where a full sized pendant would feel too heavy.

A plain black finish that lets the shape do the work

Dax is made from steel with a black finish, kept deliberately simple. There is no extra ornament or texture, so the effect comes from its slim, tapered silhouette instead. It sits comfortably with black kitchen hardware, matte worktops and other pared back, contemporary schemes.

How it works

Dax runs on a single 8W integrated LED, giving 320 lumens of warm white light at 3000K with a CRI of 90, so there is no separate bulb to buy or replace over its lifetime. It is not dimmable. The fitting is Class I, which means it requires an earth connection as part of installation. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting. The drop is adjustable from 20.3cm up to 102.2cm, and the mounting hardware sits behind a compact back plate for a clean finish at the ceiling.

The story behind Hinkley

Hinkley began in Cleveland, Ohio in 1922, when founder Phil R. Hinkley started out making outdoor lanterns, a modest debut catalogue of just fourteen products. The business stayed in family hands for generations: Stanley Wiedemer bought into it during the 1930s and took over fully after Phil died in 1937, and by around 2000 the fourth generation, Kristi, Jess and Eric Wiedemer, were taking on leadership roles of their own. The catalogue grew well beyond its lantern roots in that time, into compact, technology led pieces like Dax, built around an integrated LED rather than a socket for a separate bulb. Between 2019 and 2020 the company simplified its name from Hinkley Lighting to simply Hinkley, reflecting a range that had grown to include ceiling fans as well as lighting. Elstead Lighting has manufactured and adapted Hinkley's designs for the UK and Europe since 2012, converting fittings like this one to 220 to 240V wiring with full CE certification.
