The Collier chandelier is the biggest fitting in the collection: five arms of cast brass detailing gathered around a central column for a genuine focal point overhead. This is a large fitting: a drop that adjusts from 93.2cm to 240.6cm and a 68.5cm diameter across its five arms. Please check these measurements against your space before ordering.
Heritage Brass finish
This Collier comes in Heritage Brass, a warm aged brass tone carried over cast knob, hinge and stem detailing on all five arms. The frame is mild steel with brass detailing and glass accents, so there's real weight and texture to it rather than a moulded look. It suits dark woods, painted panelling and other warm metal fittings in the same room.
How it works
This is a five light chandelier, taking 5 x E27 bulbs, which aren't supplied, so you'll need to add your own before it can be used. It's dimmable if you fit dimmable bulbs on a compatible dimmer switch. It hangs from a central ceiling mount, with rods that let you set the drop anywhere between 93.2cm and 240.6cm, or trim back to 152.4cm for a lower ceiling. It's wired to Class I, so it needs to be properly earthed. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting.
Where it works best
The Collier's scale and five arm spread make it best suited to rooms with height and space to let it breathe, such as a dining room with a high table or a kitchen with a tall ceiling. It works well as the single statement piece over a dining table or kitchen island, rather than in a room with a lower or more compact ceiling.
The story behind Hinkley
Hinkley started in 1922, when Phil R. Hinkley began making outdoor lanterns in Cleveland, Ohio, with a first catalogue of only fourteen products. The business changed hands within his own lifetime: ill health led him to sell half the company to a travelling salesman, Stanley Wiedemer, and when Phil died in 1937, Stanley bought the remaining half and moved his family to Cleveland to run it outright. That family ownership carried on for generations, from Stanley to his grandson Rick, who joined in 1969 and spent fifty years with the company, through to the family's fourth generation, who began taking on leadership roles around 2000. A piece on the scale of this Collier chandelier, five arms and a genuine focal point, is a long way from that first small catalogue of lanterns. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has adapted Hinkley designs like this one for UK wiring and CE certification.
