This is the nine light version of Hinkley's Cello chandelier, one of the largest and most dramatic fittings in the whole collection. Nine bowed uprights fan out from a central column, each carrying its own glass shade, for a genuinely grand centrepiece. It is also a large fixture in its own right, with a diameter of 90.8cm and a drop that adjusts from 94.6cm up to 399.4cm, so it needs real space and ceiling height to do its job properly.

Antique Bronze and faux alabaster glass

The frame is mild steel finished in Antique Bronze, a hand finished effect that gives the metalwork warm, aged highlights rather than a flat, uniform tone. Because the finish is applied by hand, colour can vary slightly from one chandelier to the next, and it can also look different again once lit compared with how it appears on screen. Each of the nine arms carries a vintage style faux alabaster glass shade, which softens the light and adds a period character that suits older and traditional interiors especially well.

How it works

This chandelier hangs from the ceiling and takes nine E27 bulbs. Bulbs are not included, so you will need to add nine to your order. The fitting is dimmable when used with dimmable bulbs, though it will not dim with standard, non dimmable lamps. It is a Class I fitting, which means it must be earthed. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting.

Where it works best

Given its scale, this chandelier works best in a large dining room, a generous living room or a hallway with enough height and floor space for nine arms to spread out properly. It reads as a real focal point, so it suits a room where you want the light fitting itself to be part of the design, not just a source of light.

The story behind Hinkley

Hinkley's story starts a long way from a chandelier this size. Phil R. Hinkley founded the company in Cleveland, Ohio in 1922, with a debut catalogue of just fourteen outdoor lantern designs. After Phil became ill and sold half the business to travelling salesman Stanley Wiedemer, Stanley bought the rest following Phil's death in 1937 and moved his family from Kansas City to Cleveland to run it. Three more generations of Wiedemers have led the company since, from Stanley's grandson Rick, who joined in 1969, to the fourth generation, Kristi, Jess and Eric, who began taking on leadership roles around 2000. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has adapted Hinkley's designs for the UK, including rewiring fittings like this Cello chandelier for 220 to 240V and securing full CE certification.
