A fuller, more traditional take on the Cambridge wall light
This is the double shade version of Hinkley's Cambridge wall light, a two light fitting with a fabric shade covering each arm rather than the open beaded font style used elsewhere in the range. The extra coverage gives a softer, more enclosed glow, while keeping the same solid brass frame and beaded ball fonts as the rest of the Cambridge collection.
Burnished brass with real depth of finish
The frame is cast in solid brass and finished in Burnished Brass, a warm, slightly aged tone that sits well against dark woodwork, panelling and other traditional joinery. It pairs naturally with brass door and window hardware, and with picture lighting in the same room.
How it works
This fitting takes 2 x E14 LED bulbs, which are not supplied, so you'll need to order these separately. It's dimmable if you fit dimmable bulbs, and it wires directly to the wall through a backplate rather than plugging in. It's a Class I fitting, which means it needs to be properly earthed. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting.
Where it works best
The double shaded design suits traditional living rooms, dining rooms and hallways, where a softer, more evenly spread light is wanted from a wall fitting rather than a sharp, directional beam. It works well flanking a fireplace, either side of a mirror, or spaced along a hallway wall.
The story behind Hinkley
Hinkley started in Cleveland, Ohio in 1922, when Phil R. Hinkley began making outdoor lanterns, with a debut catalogue of just fourteen products. When Phil fell ill with tuberculosis in the mid-1930s he sold half the business to Stanley Wiedemer, a travelling salesman from Kansas City, and after Phil died in 1937 Stanley bought the rest and moved his family to Cleveland to run the company himself. The business stayed with the Wiedemer family for generations afterwards, with Stanley's grandson Rick joining in 1969 for a career that spanned fifty years. A fitting like this one, with its cast brass frame and traditional double shade, sits closer to that original New England lighting sensibility than to the ceiling fans the company later added to its range. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has adapted designs like this for the UK, rewiring them for 220 to 240V supplies and certifying them to CE standards.
