The Bolla 9 Light Chandelier is the largest piece in Hinkley's Bolla range, arranging nine sweeping arms around a central frame finished in Brushed Nickel, each arm tipped with a polished sphere and softened by a bell shaped glass shade. This is also a genuinely large fixture, with a drop that adjusts from 107.5cm up to 412.3cm (a shorter maximum of 304.8cm is also listed, depending on how the rods and chain are configured), a width of 88.9cm and a weight of 21kg. Brushed Nickel finish

Brushed Nickel gives the frame a soft, brushed texture rather than a hard mirror shine, so light plays gently across each of the nine arms instead of glaring. Paired with the bell shaped glass shades and mild steel frame, it reads as understated rather than showy, and sits comfortably against warm wood tones or cooler, more contemporary schemes. The same Bolla design is also available in a Chrome finish, if you would prefer a brighter, more reflective look.

How it works

Each of the nine arms takes one E27 bulb, so you will need nine in total. Bulbs are not supplied. The fitting is dimmable if you fit dimmable bulbs. It is wired to Class I electrics, so it needs to be properly earthed. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting, and given its size and weight, it is worth asking them to check your ceiling can support it too.

Where it works best

Nine arms and this size of drop make the Bolla 9 Light Chandelier best suited to large rooms with high ceilings: a grand dining room or open plan kitchen, a double height hallway or entrance, or a spacious living room where a full sized statement piece will not overwhelm the space. It is not the right scale for a low ceiling or a compact room.

The story behind Hinkley

Hinkley began in 1922, when Phil R. Hinkley started out making outdoor lanterns in Cleveland, Ohio, with a debut catalogue of just 14 products. After Phil's death in 1937, Stanley Wiedemer, who had already bought half the business in the mid 1930s, took over the company and moved his family to Cleveland to run it. His grandson Rick Wiedemer joined in 1969, followed by the fourth generation, Kristi, Jess and Eric Wiedemer, around 2000. A design on the scale of this nine light Bolla chandelier is a long way from those first fourteen lanterns, but it is still built by the same family business. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has manufactured and adapted Hinkley's designs, including this one, for UK wiring and full CE certification.

Is the Hinkley Bolla 9 Light Chandelier dimmable? Yes, it works with a dimmer switch as long as you fit dimmable E27 bulbs. Standard, non-dimmable bulbs will not dim even on a dimmer circuit.

Are bulbs included? No. This chandelier takes nine E27 bulbs and none are supplied, so you will need to add nine bulbs of your choice to your order.
