A compact companion to Hinkley's classic gas lanterns
The Bingham Single Light Small Wall Lantern takes the turn of the century gas lamp shape that runs through the wider Bingham range and scales it down to a single light fitting. It keeps the same nautical, period character in a smaller footprint, which makes it a good match for narrower door surrounds, gateposts, or anywhere the larger Bingham lanterns would be too much.
Solid brass in a Sienna finish
This lantern is made from solid brass and finished in Sienna, a warm, earthy tone that sits between traditional brass and bronze. Clear seedy glass panels add texture and a slightly handmade look, echoing the gas lanterns that first inspired the Bingham design. It pairs well with other aged metal finishes, such as weathered brass or bronze door hardware.
How it works
The lantern takes a single E14 bulb, which isn't supplied, so you'll need to add one when you order. It's dimmable if you use dimmable bulbs. This is a wall mounted fitting for outdoor use, and it's Class I, which means it must be properly earthed. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting.
Where it works best
This lantern is IP44 rated, so it's built to cope with rain, spray, and general exterior exposure. Its small scale suits narrower entrances, porches, and gateposts, and it works well fitted in a pair either side of a front door where two smaller lanterns look better balanced than one large one. The Sienna finish and seedy glass give this brass wall lantern a coastal, period feel that suits traditional and coastal style homes alike.
The story behind Hinkley
Hinkley started life in 1922 as a small outdoor lantern maker in Cleveland, Ohio, with a debut catalogue of just fourteen products. Phil R. Hinkley ran the business until the mid 1930s, when illness led him to sell half the company to Stanley Wiedemer, a travelling salesman who took over fully after Phil died in 1937. The Wiedemer family has run Hinkley ever since, moving into a fourth generation of leadership around the turn of this century. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has manufactured and adapted Hinkley's designs, including this lantern, for UK wiring and full CE certification. There's something fitting about a small lantern like this one tracing back to a company that itself began with a modest range of just fourteen outdoor pieces.
