A compact classic for a porch or front door
The Beacon Hill Small brings Hinkley's traditional English lantern shape down to a narrower size. It's a single light, built for spots where the full sized Beacon Hill would be too wide, without losing the heritage look: a solid aluminium frame, a peaked cap and heavily seeded glass that catches the light unevenly, the way old glass does.
Museum Black aluminium and seeded glass
This lantern is finished in Museum Black, a deep matte black that reads almost charcoal in daylight and settles quietly against brickwork or render after dark. The frame is aluminium, a material outdoor lanterns rely on because it won't rust, and the glass is clear but heavily seeded, full of small bubbles and ripples that soften the light rather than throwing a hard beam. It pairs naturally with black door furniture, slate roofs and painted brick.
How it works
The lantern takes one E27 bulb, not supplied, so you'll need to add one when you order. It's dimmable if you fit a dimmable LED and use it with a compatible dimmer switch. It's a Class I fitting, which means it needs a proper earth connection. It may need some simple assembly on arrival. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting.
Where it works best
This is an outdoor fitting, rated IP44, so it's protected against splashing and driving rain and can be mounted somewhere exposed to the weather. As the small version of the Beacon Hill design, it suits a narrower porch, a side door or a garden wall where a single, soft pool of lantern light is what's wanted rather than a wide spread. It works well either side of a front door, along a boundary wall or lighting the way to a garden gate.
The story behind Hinkley
Hinkley began in 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio, as a small maker of outdoor lanterns, with a debut catalogue of just 14 products. A fitting like this small Beacon Hill lantern sits close to that original idea: a simple, well made light for the outside of a house. The company passed through the Wiedemer family from the 1930s onwards, first under Stanley Wiedemer, who bought the business outright after Phil Hinkley died in 1937, and later under his grandson Rick, who joined the business in 1969. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has adapted Hinkley's designs for the UK, converting fittings like this one to 220 to 240V wiring with full CE certification.
