An open cage of light

Astrid takes a simple idea, an open geometric cage, and turns it into something that reads as much as sculpture as light fitting. This 5 light version holds an inner cluster of lamps that seems to float inside the welded outer frame, giving it real depth whether the lights are on or off. Metallic Matte Bronze finish

The metal frame is finished in Metallic Matte Bronze, with a second, lighter tone set inside the cage. That two-tone treatment is what gives Astrid its layered, faintly transparent look, rather than reading as one solid block of metal. It sits well alongside warm woods, aged brass and other burnished metal finishes in a scheme.

How it works

Astrid holds 5 x E14 bulbs, which are not included, so you will need to add your own when you order. It will dim if you fit dimmable bulbs. It is wired as a Class I fitting, which means it needs an earth connection. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting. The inner light cluster is wired from the bottom of the frame, keeping the wiring out of sight and letting the cage read as one uninterrupted shape. At 11kg, it needs a suitably rated ceiling rose or hook to take the weight.

The story behind Hinkley

Hinkley started small. Phil R. Hinkley founded the company in Cleveland, Ohio in 1922, with a debut catalogue of just 14 outdoor lantern designs. A piece like Astrid, with its welded cage and a drop that stretches to almost 4 metres, sits a long way from those early lanterns, though the same appetite for considered, well-made design runs through both. The Wiedemer family took over the business not long after Phil's death in 1937, and four generations of the family have shaped the company since. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has manufactured and adapted Hinkley's designs for the UK and Europe, converting fittings like this one to 220 to 240V wiring with full CE certification.

Is the Hinkley Astrid pendant dimmable? Yes, it will dim if you fit dimmable E14 bulbs and use a compatible dimmer switch. Standard, non-dimmable bulbs will not dim.

Are bulbs included? No. Astrid takes 5 x E14 bulbs, which you will need to buy separately and fit yourself.
