The Hinkley Amelia Single Mini Pendant in Chrome takes the hinges and clasps of an old world lantern and turns them into something you can hang above a kitchen island or a small dining table. It is a single light drop, sized for spaces where a full sized pendant would feel like too much, or for hanging in a row along a run of worktop.

A cooler, brighter chrome finish

Chrome gives this pendant a brighter, more contemporary look than the Amelia collection's brass and bronze options. The cast metal frame and cast glass fitter carry the same hinge and clasp detailing seen across the range, and the reflective chrome surface suits a modern kitchen just as well as a more traditional room. Below the frame, an etched opal glass dome has a prismatic lens set into its base, which softens the light while still letting a little sparkle through. The same design is also available in a Nickel finish, if you would like a slightly warmer tone.

How it works

This is a mini pendant, so it hangs on its own cable rather than sitting flush to the ceiling, giving a single, focused drop of light. The cable adjusts to give a drop of between 31.8cm and 99.8cm, so it can be set to suit different ceiling heights. It takes one E27 LED bulb, which is not included, so you will need to add one to your order. It is dimmable if you fit dimmable bulbs and pair it with a compatible dimmer switch. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting. It is wired to Class I, which means it requires an earth connection.

Where it works best

Its compact scale suits kitchen islands and breakfast bars particularly well, especially when a few are hung in a row above a run of worktop. It also works nicely over a small dining table, on a landing, or in a reading nook, anywhere you want a single pool of light rather than broad, even coverage.

The story behind Hinkley

Hinkley started out in 1922 as a small outdoor lantern maker in Cleveland, Ohio, founded by Phil R. Hinkley with a debut catalogue of just 14 products. That lantern making background is still visible in details like Amelia's hinges and clasps, even scaled down to mini pendant size. Phil sold half the business to Stanley Wiedemer, a travelling salesman from Kansas City, after falling ill in the mid 1930s, and Stanley took over the company entirely after Phil died in 1937, moving his family to Cleveland to run it. His descendants, including grandson Rick Wiedemer Jr from 1969, have kept it a family business ever since. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has adapted Hinkley's designs like this one for UK homes, converting them to 220 to 240V wiring with full CE certification.
