Where it works best

Because it sits flush to the ceiling, this light works well anywhere a pendant would hang too low, kitchens and dining rooms in particular, as well as hallways, landings and bedrooms where you want warmth and detail without losing ceiling height. It's designed for indoor use only, and isn't suitable for bathrooms, outdoor spaces or other wet locations.

The story behind Hinkley

Hinkley started out in 1922 as a small outdoor lantern maker in Cleveland, Ohio, founded by Phil R. Hinkley with a debut catalogue of just 14 products. The business changed hands within the same small circle of people who believed in it: Stanley Wiedemer bought in during the 1930s and took over fully after Phil's death in 1937, moving his own family to Cleveland to run the company. A flush fitting like this one, with its cast detailing and old world feel, reflects how far that original catalogue has grown, from a handful of lanterns to a full range of indoor and outdoor lighting. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has manufactured and adapted Hinkley's designs for the UK, converting fittings like this one to 220 to 240V wiring with full CE certification.
