Slightly taller than Harte's smallest pier light at 0.89 metres, this fixture from the Station Master range is designed to sit on a flat pier top, the kind found on wider gate pillars or masonry piers rather than narrow posts. Like the rest of the range, it takes its form from lighting once used on Irish railway platforms in the late 1800s, built in cast iron and galvanised steel.
Cast iron and galvanised steel build
Cast iron gives the light its weight and form, with galvanised steel used where extra resistance to corrosion is needed. Harte says the cast iron and steel elements of its lighting carry a lifetime guarantee against cracking, bending or breaking under normal conditions, with exclusions for surface finish, electrical components, and damage caused during installation. Gloss black is the standard finish, with other colours available on request.
How it works
A cylindrical, polycarbonate glazed shade spreads the light widely, while the ornate cast iron cap encloses the lamp housing above it, directing the glow down toward the pier and cutting down on glare and light spilling upward. It needs to be wired into the mains supply, and we'd suggest having a qualified electrician carry out the connection.
Where it works best
Its flat pier fitting suits broader stone or rendered piers, such as those flanking a wider driveway entrance or the piers of a boundary wall, where the extra few centimetres in height and the flat base give it a steadier, more grounded look than a narrower pier light would. It reads well as a matched pair either side of an entrance.
Harte, Irish craft since 1983
This pier light is made by Harte Outdoor Lighting, a family run manufacturer based in New Ross, County Wexford, in business since 1983. Harte says its lighting can be found at notable Irish locations including Áras an Uachtaráin, Adare Manor and the K Club, as well as on public and commercial projects across Ireland and the UK.
