Harte Classic Railway Style 0.81m Pier Light - Cast Iron, Steel & Copper Head

This 0.81 metre pier light shares its cast iron and galvanised steel body with the standard version in Harte's Station Master range, but is finished with a copper head, a genuine material difference rather than a colour option. The range takes its inspiration from lighting once used on Irish railway platforms in the late 1800s, and the copper detailing gives this piece a warmer, more distinctive top note against the black iron below.

Cast iron, steel and copper detailing

The main body is cast iron with galvanised steel elements, finished in gloss black as standard, with other colours available on request. The head is copper, left as its own natural metal finish rather than painted, so it will age and tone differently to the black iron beneath it over time. Harte says the cast iron and steel elements of its lighting carry a lifetime guarantee against cracking, bending or breaking under normal conditions, with exclusions for surface finish, electrical components, copper and aluminium products, and damage caused during installation.

How it works

The cylindrical shade uses polycarbonate glazing to spread light broadly, and the copper cap sits over the lamp housing in place of the standard cast iron cap, still doing the same job of containing the light source and directing it downward. It requires a mains wiring connection, which we'd recommend leaving to a qualified electrician.

Where it works best

Because the copper head catches the light differently to black iron, this version suits entrances where the light will be seen up close, such as either side of a front door, on the piers of a courtyard gate, or anywhere the detail at the top of the fitting is going to be noticed rather than seen from a distance.

This pier light comes from Harte Outdoor Lighting, a family run manufacturer based in New Ross, County Wexford, making cast iron lighting since 1983. Harte says its lighting is installed at notable Irish locations including Áras an Uachtaráin, Adare Manor and the K Club, alongside private homes and hospitality venues across Ireland and the UK.
