Harte Classic Railway Style 0.33m Hanging Light With Chain - Cast Iron & Galvanised Steel

Standing at 0.33 metres, this hanging light is the taller of two chain suspended lights in Harte's Station Master range, a collection that draws on the lamps once fitted to Irish railway platforms in the late 1800s. Hung from a ceiling rose, it has enough scale to anchor a wider porch or entrance without losing the restrained, functional look the range is known for.

Cast iron and galvanised steel build

Cast iron and galvanised steel form the body of the light, materials picked for how well they hold up outdoors over years rather than seasons. Harte states that the cast iron and steel elements of its lighting are covered by a lifetime guarantee against cracking, bending or breaking under normal conditions, excluding surface finish, electrical parts, and damage caused during installation. Gloss black is the standard finish, with other colours available on request.

How it works

A cylindrical polycarbonate shade spreads the light broadly, and the ornate cast iron cap above it encloses the lamp housing, cutting glare and keeping the beam directed downward. The chain and ceiling rose let it hang with a small amount of natural movement, which suits its slightly larger scale.

Where it works best

At just over 0.3 metres, it suits verandas, covered porticos and wider entrance porches, spaces with enough headroom for a hanging fixture to read as a feature rather than an afterthought. It also holds its own mounted centrally over a porch rather than only in pairs.

Harte Outdoor Lighting has been making cast iron lighting like this since 1983, from its workshop in New Ross, County Wexford. What started with Willie Harte is now carried on by Liz Harte and the next generation of the family, including Jack and Sam Harte.
