A Sunburst of Reclaimed Cardboard

The Scraplights Sun 32 turns waste cardboard into a piece of light. Each of its rays is laser cut from reclaimed corrugated board, then bonded by hand around a central glass diffuser, so every pendant has its own particular rhythm of light and shadow. This is the Natural finish, 82cm in diameter, left in the cardboard's own honeyed tone rather than tinted or painted. Switched on, it throws a soft, sunburst pattern of warm light and shadow across ceiling and walls.

The Natural Finish

Natural is the truest expression of the material: undyed, uncoated corrugated cardboard, so the grain, the corrugation lines and the slightly rough cut edge of each ray are all visible up close. The colour sits somewhere between honey and toast, and it will read a little differently depending on the light in the room and the bulb fitted inside it. Two Natural Sun 32 pendants will never be quite identical, since the rays are cut and assembled by hand rather than machine pressed into uniform sheets. It suits a room with exposed brick, timber or linen, rather than a very clean, high gloss interior.

How It Works

The pendant is built around a central glass diffuser, with the cardboard rays wrapped around it to shield the bulbs from direct view. It takes 4 x E27 LED bulbs, each rated 15W maximum, which are not supplied. Fit it with dimmable LED bulbs and a compatible dimmer switch and the light output can be dimmed. It comes with a 2 metre black fabric cord and a black powder coated steel canopy, measuring 2.5cm high and 10cm across. This is a hardwired pendant, so it must be installed, and the drop set, by a qualified electrician. A 5 metre cord is available on request for taller ceilings or a lower hang.

Where It Works Best

At 82cm across, the Sun 32 wants a bit of room to read properly: a dining table, a living room with some ceiling height, a stairwell or a wide hallway. It suits an organic, relaxed modern interior where a handmade, textured piece feels at home, rather than a strictly formal or minimalist scheme. As a single striking pendant, it works best as the main light in a room rather than one of several.

The Scraplights Story

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights range, which includes the Sun 32, began almost by accident: the founders built an early cardboard light for a sustainable design competition using leftover cardboard, and the response encouraged them to develop it into a full product line.

• Keep it dry and dust with a soft, dry cloth. The cardboard is bonded with a non-toxic adhesive but is not designed for damp or outdoor spaces.
• It weighs approximately 6.2kg, so check your ceiling fixing is suitable before installation, and always use a qualified electrician to hang and wire it.
• Carries a 2 year warranty and CE safety certification.
