Where the warmer Blonde shades are laser cut, this pale White finish is cut by hand with a knife, since a laser's charring would mark and discolour such a light surface. Each ring is cut from corrugated cardboard and hand assembled into the stacked, moon like silhouette the Scraplights range is known for. In White, the surface reads as a clean, even pale finish rather than the natural honey tones of Blonde cardboard, so it suits Scandinavian, Japandi and other pared back interiors where a warmer tone might feel too rustic. It pairs well with white oak, pale ash, matt black and brushed metal finishes, and works as a quiet, sculptural piece rather than a bold, colourful statement.

How It Works

The Moon 14 is hardwired to the ceiling, arriving with a 2m white fabric cord and a round canopy measuring 2.5cm in height and 10cm in diameter in a grey powder coated finish (a 5m cord is available on request, please enquire). Because it is hardwired, it should always be installed by a qualified electrician, who will also set the exact drop on site. It takes a single E27 bulb, 15W maximum LED, not supplied. Fit a dimmable LED bulb with a compatible dimmer switch and the Moon 14 can be dimmed; a standard, non dimmable bulb will run at full brightness.

The Story Behind Scraplights

The Scraplights collection, which the Moon 14 belongs to, began almost by accident. While competing in a sustainable design competition, Graypants co-founder Seth Grizzle started experimenting with leftover corrugated cardboard, and found that layered, cut rings of it could hold light beautifully and cast striking shadows. That discovery became the starting point for Scraplights. Graypants itself was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati, and the brand now makes its pieces across studios in the Pacific Northwest and Amsterdam. Every Moon 14 shade is still hand assembled ring by ring, so no two are ever quite identical, and the White finish is hand knife cut on top of that for an especially crisp result.
