A Honeycomb Shade Left Exactly As Cardboard Comes

The Hive 9 is the smallest pendant in Graypants' Scraplights Hive range, just 23cm across. In the Natural finish, the honeycombed shade is left completely raw and uncoated, so nothing is added to hide the cardboard's own colour, grain or texture. Once lit, it glows a warm amber through its facets and throws a soft, honeycombed shadow pattern across nearby walls and ceilings, rather than lighting a room evenly.

Raw Cardboard, Nothing Added

Natural is the rawest of the Hive finishes. The corrugated cardboard is laser cut into its honeycomb lattice, then hand assembled with a non-toxic adhesive and treated with a non-toxic fire retardant, but the surface itself is left completely untouched, so the kraft brown colour and visible corrugation of the material is the finish. Because each shade is pieced together by hand, small variation in tone and texture between pieces is normal. It suits interiors built around visible, honest materials such as timber, linen and rattan, and pairs comfortably with black, bronze or brass fittings nearby.

How It Works

The Hive 9 is a hardwired ceiling pendant, so it needs to be fitted by a qualified electrician. It hangs from a 2m black fabric cord as standard, with a 5m cord available on request, connecting to a black powder coated canopy measuring 2.5cm high by 10cm diameter that sits flush to the ceiling. Drop length is set by your electrician at installation. It takes a single E27 bulb, 15W maximum LED, which is not supplied. Fit a dimmable LED bulb and pair it with a compatible dimmer switch if you want the option to dim the glow.

Its small scale suits spots where a larger pendant would overwhelm the space: over a bedside table, in a reading nook, along a hallway or above a stairwell, or grouped in twos or threes above a dining table for a softer, more textured alternative to one large fixture. It also works well in a living room or bedroom looking for a warm, low accent light rather than bright, even illumination.

The Story Behind Scraplights

The Scraplights collection, which the Hive 9 belongs to, began almost by accident. Graypants was experimenting with leftover cardboard for a sustainable design competition when the idea for a lit, laser cut cardboard shade first took shape. Graypants itself was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati.
