A Genuine Statement in Layered Cardboard

The Drum 36 is one of the largest pendants in Graypants' Scraplights collection, a full 92cm across and 35cm deep, built to anchor a room rather than sit quietly above it. Layers of laser cut, reclaimed corrugated cardboard are hand assembled ring by ring, then bonded with a non-toxic adhesive and treated with a non-toxic fire retardant. A fitted glass diffuser sits beneath the shade, so the light that escapes through the gaps in the rings is softened and evened out rather than left raw.

Natural Kraft, Left Honest

This Natural finish keeps the cardboard in its own kraft tone, with no stain or dye added, so every ridge and cut edge stays visible. Because each ring is placed and bonded by hand, the exact pattern varies slightly from one Drum 36 to the next, a mark of the handmade process rather than a flaw. It pairs comfortably with timber, rattan, linen and other natural materials, and suits an organic modern, Scandinavian or boutique hotel interior where the material itself is part of the design.

How It Works

Inside the shade sit three E27 lamp holders, each taking a bulb up to 15W LED, with no bulb supplied. Fit dimmable LED bulbs and pair them with a compatible dimmer switch if you want to bring the light down for evenings. The glass diffuser beneath the rings softens and spreads the glow, while light escaping through the cardboard itself casts a shifting, lattice like shadow pattern across ceiling and walls. It is a hardwired pendant, hung on a 2m black fabric cord from a small black powder coated canopy (a 5m cord is available, please enquire), and should be installed by a qualified electrician, who will set the finished drop on site.

Given its scale, the Drum 36 works best somewhere with real height and space around it: a double height entryway, a restaurant dining room, a hotel lobby, or a large open plan living or dining space. The Scraplights Story

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection the Drum 36 belongs to began almost by accident, when the pair entered a sustainable design competition and started experimenting with leftover corrugated cardboard, discovering that layered, laser cut rings could filter light and cast shadow in a way few other materials do. That original idea is still what every Drum shade is built from today, made across Graypants' studios in the Pacific Northwest and Amsterdam.
