The Drum 18 is the smallest pendant in Graypants' Drum family, a neat 45cm diameter shade built from rings of reclaimed corrugated cardboard, knife cut and hand assembled one by one. Finished here in white rather than the collection's natural kraft tone, it throws a softer, more neutral light, and a fitted glass diffuser beneath the shade evens that light out further so it glows gently rather than in hot patches.

A Clean White Finish Over Warm Texture

The White finish sits over the cardboard's own ridged, layered texture rather than hiding it, so you still see the individual rings and their subtle grain, just in a bright, neutral tone instead of natural kraft brown. It suits pale, Scandinavian or Japandi rooms, and pairs comfortably with white or light oak furniture, brushed brass or chrome fittings, and other pared back, contemporary finishes. Because each shade is hand assembled ring by ring, small variation in texture from piece to piece is normal and part of the material's character.

How It Works

Beneath the cardboard shade sits a fitted glass diffuser, which spreads the light from the bulbs evenly across the inside of the drum rather than leaving bright spots near each socket. The fitting takes three E27 bulbs, 15W maximum LED each, none supplied, and can be dimmed if you fit dimmable bulbs and pair them with a compatible dimmer switch. It hardwires to the ceiling on a 2m white fabric cord (a 5m cord is available on request) with a small white powder coated canopy, 2.5cm high and 10cm in diameter. As with any hardwired fitting, installation should always be carried out by a qualified electrician.

Its compact 45cm diameter makes the Drum 18 a good fit for spaces where a larger pendant would feel like too much: a bedside table, a breakfast nook, a narrow hallway or a small landing. The Story Behind Scraplights

The Scraplights collection, which the Drum 18 belongs to, began almost by accident. While competing in a sustainable design competition, Graypants co-founder Seth Grizzle started experimenting with leftover corrugated cardboard, and found that layered, hand assembled rings of it could hold light beautifully. That discovery became the starting point for Scraplights. Graypants itself was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati, and the brand now makes its pieces across studios in the Pacific Northwest and Amsterdam.
