The Drop 18 is the smaller of Graypants' two teardrop shaped Scraplights, and in White it takes on a paler, more contemporary character than the brand's raw cardboard originals. The shade measures 45cm in height and 25cm in diameter, compact enough for a landing, a small vanity area, or a pair hung either side of a bed or sofa. Built from layered rings of corrugated cardboard, it relies on the same construction that makes every Scraplight what it is, just finished in a bright white rather than left in its natural tone.

Crisp White Cardboard, Hand Cut by Knife

Where most Scraplights are laser cut, the White finish on the Drop 18 is cut by hand with a knife rather than a laser, then hand assembled and bonded with a non-toxic adhesive before the whole shade is treated with a non-toxic fire retardant. The pale finish keeps the fixture feeling light and contemporary rather than raw or rustic, and it pairs comfortably with white walls, pale oak, and simple, uncluttered schemes. Lit, the cardboard still filters bulb light into a warm amber glow and throws fine shadow detail across nearby surfaces, so the white shell and the warm light it casts sit in gentle contrast with each other.

How It Works

The Drop 18 is a hardwired pendant, supplied on a 2m white fabric cord with a small round canopy at the ceiling, 2.5cm high and 10cm in diameter in a white powder coated finish (a 5m cord is available, please ask us to enquire on your behalf). It takes a single E27 bulb, up to 15W LED, which is not supplied. Fit a dimmable LED bulb with a compatible dimmer switch if you want to bring the light down for evenings; a standard bulb will simply run at full brightness. This pendant is CE certified and carries a 2 year warranty. Have a qualified electrician handle the installation and set the drop height on site, since it is hardwired rather than plug in.

Because it is the smaller of the two Drop pendants, the Drop 18 suits spots where a bigger shade would feel like too much: a landing, a small vanity area, a narrow hallway or stairwell, or a pair flanking a bed or sofa. The Scraplights Story

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection the Drop 18 belongs to began almost by accident, when the pair entered a sustainable design competition and turned to leftover cardboard as their material, discovering that layered rings of it could filter light in a way few other materials do. That original idea is still what the Drop 18 is built from today, just dressed in white rather than left in its natural tone.
