A Softer Light From Layered Cardboard

This is the Drop 18, the smaller size in Graypants' Scraplights Drop line, with a 25cm diameter shade built from tightly stacked rings of cardboard. Switch it on and the light comes through warm and amber, breaking into soft shifting shadow across ceiling and walls rather than a single bright beam. This particular piece is finished in Natural, the collection's rawest option.

Left Raw: The Natural Finish

Natural means the cardboard is left in its own undyed tone rather than treated with colour, so the texture and grain of the material stay visible layer by layer. Every laser cut ring reads slightly differently under light, giving the shade a quiet, organic surface rather than a uniform one. It sits comfortably against warm timber, plaster, exposed brick or simple painted walls, and suits a pared back or Scandinavian style room as easily as an industrial one.

How It Works

• Graypants laser cuts reclaimed corrugated cardboard into rings, then hand assembles each shade, bonding the layers with non-toxic adhesive and treating the finished piece with a non-toxic fire retardant.
• The shade measures 25cm in diameter and 45cm in height, hung on a 2m black fabric cord from a round black powder coated canopy, 10cm in diameter and 2.5cm high. A 5m cord is available on request.
• It takes a single E27 fitting, with a maximum bulb rating of 15W. No bulb is included, so bring your own LED.
• Fit it with a dimmable LED bulb and it will work on a dimmer circuit, giving you control over how strong that amber glow is.
• This pendant is hardwired, so it must be installed by a qualified electrician. It carries CE safety certification and a 2 year warranty.

Where It Works Best

At 25cm across, the Drop 18 is one of the more compact pendants in the Scraplights range, which makes it a good fit for a bedside table, a reading corner, or a hallway or landing where a full sized fixture would feel like too much. It also works well grouped, two or three hung at slightly different heights over a kitchen island, dining table or breakfast bar, where the layered shadows multiply nicely across a wider surface.

Cardboard, By Accident

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The story behind Scraplights is that the collection began almost by accident, at a sustainable design competition, when the pair started building with the leftover cardboard on hand instead of buying new material. That original piece of improvisation grew into the range the Drop 18 now belongs to.

• Each shade is hand assembled from cardboard, so small variations in tone and texture between pieces are normal and part of the material, not a fault.
• This item is strictly non-returnable due to its handmade nature. Please get in touch with Moonlight if you would like to see the fittings in person or request a swatch before you order.
• No bulb is included. Use a single E27 bulb rated at 15W or under, and choose a dimmable LED if you want it on a dimmer switch.
• The fabric cord runs 2m as standard. A 5m cord is available, please enquire if you need the extra length.
• Keep the shade away from damp and direct water. Dust it gently with a soft, dry cloth rather than any liquid cleaner.
