A Cooler, Softer Take on the Scraplights Pattern

The Bell 16 is one of the larger shapes in Graypants' Scraplights collection, and this version comes in White rather than the collection's usual natural kraft tone. Each ring is knife cut by hand, since the pale board would scorch under a laser, then assembled ring by ring into the pendant's familiar bell curve. Lit, it throws the same intricate lattice of shadow across ceiling and walls that Scraplights are known for, only in a cooler, more diffused light rather than the warm amber of the natural board.

White Cardboard, Cut and Built by Hand

The shade is made from reclaimed corrugated cardboard, hand assembled from knife cut rings and bonded with a non-toxic, fire retardant adhesive. The White finish reads more like a paper lantern than a rustic material, calm and architectural rather than raw, and it sits well against white or pale grey walls, timber tables, or alongside other neutral, textural materials. Because each ring is cut and placed by hand, expect a little natural variation from one pendant to the next. That is part of how it is made, not a fault.

How It Works

This is a hardwired ceiling pendant, fitted with a white fabric cord and a small round canopy in grey powder coated finish. It takes a single E27 bulb, up to 15W maximum, LED only and not supplied, so you can choose the exact warmth and brightness you want. Choose a dimmable compatible LED if you would like it on a dimmer switch. As with any hardwired fitting, it should always be installed by a qualified electrician.

Where It Works Best

At 38cm across, the Bell 16 works well as a single statement pendant over a dining table, breakfast bar or reception desk, and just as well grouped in twos or threes above a long console table or along a staircase. Its soft, even glow suits living rooms, bedrooms and hallways where you want interesting shadow play without a strong colour cast.

From a Seattle Design Studio, Built on Leftover Cardboard

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection began almost by accident, born from leftover cardboard at a sustainable design competition, and grew into the ring built pendants and shades the studio is now known for.

• Keep it dry and dust it gently. Cardboard should not be wiped with a damp cloth.
• Shade measures 40cm height x 38cm diameter. The canopy is 2.5cm height x 10cm diameter in grey powder coated finish, with a 2m white fabric cord as standard. A 5m cord is available, please enquire.
• Comes with a 2 year warranty and CE safety certification.
