The Ausi 14 in Natural is the biggest pendant in Graypants' Ausi range, 39cm across and built from layered rings of reclaimed corrugated cardboard, laser cut and hand assembled into a softly faceted dome. Left in its raw Natural tone, the shade keeps the deep kraft brown colour of the cardboard itself, so the light it casts has a warm, textured quality rather than a bright, artificial one.

Raw Kraft Brown, Layer by Layer

Natural is the darker, more rugged of the Ausi finishes, closer to the cardboard's own kraft brown colour than the honeyed Blonde version. Each ring is laser cut and stacked by hand, so the surface keeps its natural grain and slightly rough edge, with every cut line and ridge left on show rather than smoothed away. It suits dark timber, black ironmongery, leather and other earthy, textural materials, and reads well in an industrial, Japandi or otherwise pared back interior.

How It Works

The Ausi 14 is hardwired to the ceiling, with a black powder coated canopy measuring 2.5cm in height and 10cm in diameter, and a black fabric cord that runs 2m as standard (a 5m cord is available on request, please enquire). The drop itself is set on site by your electrician when it is installed. It takes one E27 bulb, 15W maximum LED, which is not supplied. If you fit a dimmable LED bulb and pair it with a compatible dimmer switch, the Ausi 14 can be dimmed; a standard, non dimmable bulb will simply run at full brightness.

Where It Works Best

As the largest shade in the Ausi range, it works well as a single focal pendant above a dining table, in a stairwell, or as a statement piece in a hallway or living room. It also suits boutique hospitality settings such as a hotel dining room or lobby, where one considered pendant can anchor the whole space. The Story Behind Scraplights

The Scraplights collection, which the Ausi 14 belongs to, began almost by accident. While competing in a sustainable design competition, Graypants co-founder Seth Grizzle started experimenting with leftover corrugated cardboard, and found that layered, laser cut rings of it could hold light beautifully and cast striking shadows. That discovery became the starting point for Scraplights. Graypants itself was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati, and the brand now makes its pieces across studios in the Pacific Northwest and Amsterdam. Every Ausi 14 shade is still hand assembled from individual cardboard rings, so no two are ever quite identical.
