A Softer, Brighter Take on the Scraplights Shade

The Ausi 12 in White is a scaled down version of Graypants' cardboard pendant range, finished in a lighter tone than the standard natural Scraplights. Rather than the coarser knife slit surface used elsewhere in the range, White finish shades are knife cut, a small change that keeps the same fine, layered ridges but leaves a cleaner, brighter surface. At 28cm in diameter and 20cm in height, it's a compact, mid scale shade, hand assembled from reclaimed corrugated cardboard.

The White Finish

Each shade is built up from many thin layers of reclaimed corrugated cardboard, cut and stacked by hand into the rounded, slightly tapered Ausi silhouette. The White finish sits over that layered structure rather than hiding it, so the ridges and edges of the cardboard are still visible up close, just in a paler, more neutral tone than the raw brown finish. It suits pale walls, whitewashed wood, and Scandinavian or minimalist rooms where a warmer natural cardboard tone would stand out too much. The shade pairs with a white fabric cord and a small round canopy finished in grey powder coated metal.

How It Works

The pendant is hardwired, so it needs to be connected by a qualified electrician at installation. It takes one E27 bulb, up to 15W maximum LED, which is not supplied. Fitted with a compatible dimmable LED, the Ausi 12 can be dimmed; check the bulb packaging to confirm before you buy one. The fabric cord runs 2m as standard (a 5m cord is available on request, please enquire), and the drop is set to suit your ceiling at the point of installation. Light filters out through the perforated cardboard sides for a soft, diffused glow rather than a direct beam.

Where It Works Best

Its 28cm diameter makes it easy to place singly above a bedside table, in a hallway, or over a small dining table, or in a cluster of two or three at slightly different heights above a kitchen island or a longer dining table. Because the light is soft and filtered rather than bright and directional, it works better as an accent or secondary light source than as the sole light in a large room. It suits Scandinavian, minimalist, and Japandi style interiors, and any room where a warm toned natural cardboard fixture would feel too rustic.

Graypants: From Seattle Studio to Global Cardboard Lighting

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights range that the Ausi 12 belongs to began almost by accident, when the pair entered a sustainable design competition and built a lighting piece from leftover cardboard scraps rather than buying new material. That original idea, layered reclaimed cardboard cut into a rounded shade, is still how every Scraplights pendant is made today.
