The Ausi 12 pendant in Natural brings Graypants' signature reclaimed cardboard Scraplights down to a smaller, more versatile scale, just 28cm across. Laser cut from layered rings of corrugated cardboard and left in its own honest, undyed tone, the shade filters light into soft, latticed patterns rather than casting one hard beam. At this size it suits a bedside pairing, a hallway run, or a cluster of two or three above a bar counter or kitchen island, without dominating the room the way a larger Scraplight would.

Natural: The Cardboard's Own Honest Tone

Natural is Graypants' most raw finish, the corrugated cardboard left as it comes, with no stain or dye added. Every ring is laser cut, then hand assembled and bonded with a non-toxic adhesive, before the whole shade is treated with a non-toxic fire retardant for safe indoor use. The result keeps the material's own papery grain and ridged edge on show, so light passing through falls in fine, uneven bands rather than an even wash. It sits comfortably next to light oak, rattan, linen and other natural, textural materials, and pairs well with brass or bronze fittings nearby. Because each shade is hand assembled, expect gentle variation in the ring pattern from one pendant to the next.

How It Works

The Ausi 12 is a hardwired ceiling pendant, hung on a 2m black fabric cord from a small round canopy, 2.5cm high and 10cm in diameter, in a black powder coated finish. A 5m cord is available if you need extra drop, just ask Moonlight to enquire on your behalf. It takes a single E27 bulb, 15W maximum LED, which is not supplied, so you can choose the exact brightness and warmth yourself. Fit a dimmable LED bulb and pair it with a compatible dimmer switch if you want to bring the light down for evenings; a standard bulb will simply run at full brightness. As a hardwired fitting, it should be installed by a qualified electrician, who can set the finished drop to suit your ceiling at the same time.

Where It Works Best

Its compact scale makes the Ausi 12 an easy fit for spots where a bigger Scraplight would feel like too much: a bedside pairing, either side of a headboard, along a narrow hallway or stairwell, or grouped in twos or threes above a bar counter or kitchen island. It also works well in living rooms and dining rooms as a softer, secondary light alongside a main fitting, wherever you want the warm, latticed glow of cardboard rather than a bright, even wash.

The Story Behind Scraplights

The Scraplights collection, which the Ausi 12 belongs to, began almost by accident. While competing in a sustainable design competition, Graypants co founder Seth Grizzle started experimenting with leftover corrugated cardboard, and found that layered, laser cut rings of it could hold light beautifully and cast striking shadows. That discovery became the starting point for Scraplights. Graypants itself was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati, and the brand now makes its pieces across studios in the Pacific Northwest and Amsterdam.
