A Long Run of Oxidised Steel

The Roest 150h Pendant is the largest drum shape in Graypants' Roest collection, a horizontal hardwired pendant built from naturally oxidised steel. In this Zinc finish, that oxidisation is sealed at a cool, silvery grey stage instead of running on to the collection's signature rust orange. It measures 150cm in length and weighs 6.6kg, so this is a genuinely large, heavy fixture built to anchor a whole run of ceiling rather than sit as a single point of light.

The Zinc Finish

Where most Roest pieces are left to rust through to a warm orange patina, the Zinc finish stops that process early. The steel is coated and sealed while the oxidisation is still cool and silvery, giving a more industrial, gunmetal grey surface with the same raw texture as the rest of the range. Because the finish comes from a natural reaction on real steel rather than a painted colour, expect gentle variation in tone and pattern from one pendant to the next. It sits comfortably against black metal, dark wood, concrete and other Industrial Neutrals finishes for a considered, muted materials palette.

How It Works

The pendant runs on a single 14.4W integrated LED, built into the body of the fixture rather than a lamp you replace yourself. It gives a warm 2700K light and is Triac dimmable with a compatible dimmer, so you can bring it down for evenings without changing the fitting. The drum body hangs on an adjustable black fabric cord fitted to a ceiling canopy measuring 2.5cm high and 10cm in diameter, finished in black powder coated steel. As with any hardwired fitting, this pendant should always be installed and connected by a qualified electrician.

Where It Works Best

Its length makes it suited to spaces with a run to fill rather than a single central point, a kitchen island, a long dining table, or a boardroom style desk in a home office. It gives industrial, Japandi and minimalist schemes a horizontal anchor overhead, and works well as a statement piece over a table where you might otherwise hang two or three smaller pendants in a row.

Graypants and the Roest Collection

The Roest collection was developed by Graypants with Dutch design studio VanJoost, led by designer Joost van Veldhuizen. Each piece is handmade in the Netherlands from real steel, left to oxidise naturally rather than finished with a painted effect. Once the surface reaches the tone the makers are looking for, it is sealed to stop the rusting process there. Because that process is natural rather than applied, no two pieces are ever quite identical.
